Procedure

  1. Create a user ID on the DB2 database that matches the schema name that will be migrated from MySQL. For example, if schema “CCDEV53” is the candidate for migration on MySQL, create a user ID named “CCDEV53” on DB2.
    Important: Follow the instructions for creating the user with relevant page size (a minimum of 8K is required) and table spaces on DB2.
  2. Install IBM Control Center and configure it with a DB2 database. For connection parameters, provide the user ID you configured in step 1.
    Important: Do not start the engine until the migration is complete.
  3. Ensure the tables, views, and indexes relevant to IBM Control Center have been created on the DB2 database used in step 2.
  4. Download the Data Movement Tool.
  5. After the tool has been downloaded, extract the contents of the .zip folder to a temporary location on the host where DB2 is installed.
  6. Configure the source database.
    1. Select MySQL from the drop-down list.
    2. Provide the connection parameters, along with a MySQL JDBC driver to establish the connection.
  7. Configure the destination datasource.
    1. Select DB2 LUW from the drop-down list.
    2. Provide the connection parameters, along with a DB2 JDBC driver to establish the connection.
    3. Connect with the user ID you configured in step 1.
  8. Select the candidate schema for migration from the list of MySQL schemas displayed.
  9. Click Extract DDL/Data. The tool extracts the data from MySQL schema and stores it on the file system in the same location where the tool is installed.
  10. After the data extraction is complete, click Deploy DDL/Data. The MySQL data is deployed on DB2.
  11. Validate the row counts on both the source and destination tables.

Using IBM DB2 to MySQL conversion and synchronization tools.

When you start DBConvert or DBSync application in GUI mode it guides you through several steps to set up the database migration or synchronization:

1. Connect to IBM DB2 source database.If a source database requires you to log in, you can specify a user name/ password and host/ port parameters.

2. Connect to MySQL destination database.Specifying parameters for destination database looks like the same as for source. Usually, it consists of defining connection settings and username/password pairs.

NOTE #1: Every DBConvert or DBSync tool has two different databases in its name. That means any specified database from a pair can be set up as a source or destination. Besides, the same type of database may be set up both as a source or destination.

As an example, here is the list of possible migration directions with on-premises databases:

  • IBM DB2 to MySQL
  • MySQL to IBM DB2
  • IBM DB2 to IBM DB2
  • MySQL to MySQL

NOTE #2: Don’t be confused by the fact that connections to cloud databases like Amazon RDS, Google Cloud, and Heroku are not explicitly specified in the configuration of a source or destination in the DBConvert / DBSync interface. To connect to Cloud database instances, use the same settings as you do for traditional on-premises databases.

NOTE #3: Your connections to source and target databases stay active until you close DBConvert/ DBSync application or reopen new connections on “source” and “destination” steps.

3. Custoimzation and configuration.At the next step, you can specify precisely which tables, fields, indices, views you want to transfer to the MySQL destination database. Just check/ uncheck the box in front of each database object you want to convert.

4. Detection of potential database migration issues. Errors and WarningsThe database typically constrains certain relations on the data that cannot be violated. On the customization step, a smart error checker verifies all possible Data integrity and Referential integrity issues and highlights them, if any, before performing a migration.

By default, DBConvert tries to automatically map the database types of the source IBM DB2 database to the closest equivalent of the target MySQL database types. However, you can manually change the data types for the entire database globally using the “Global mapping” or individually for each field. Check out Smart error checker. Execution. The final stage of data migration from IBM DB2 to MySQL. Once you configure source and destination databases for migration in the previous steps, you can start the actual conversion or synchronization process.

Click the “Commit” button to start conversion. Also, here, you can monitor the migtation/ synchronization process.

Optionally save connection settings and configuration parameters into the session file to schedule the launching of sync or migration jobs regularly.

Command line mode

Previously saved sessions can be passed as parameters to Command-Line DBConvert Client. A session keeps IBM DB2 source and MySQL target database connection settings with other specified options.

NOTE: First, you have to run the software in GUI mode to create a session file with initial parameters.

How do I migrate a table and its data from DB2 to MySQL

Discussion

Migrating one table’s worth of data between DB2 and MySQL is a fairly easy task, and does not necessarily require the use of 3rd party tools or programming. We will cover here specifically using DB2’s Export program to export data and mysqlimport to then import that data into MySQL.

Schema Migration

Any data migration must first be preceded by a schema migration. It may be that you have a schema definition already that you used with DB2 to create the table, which you can then tweak following some of the guidelines presented in data type and index migration articles, and use it to create the equivalent table in MySQL. One can use the DB2 db2look command to extract appropriate ddl for the tables in the database.

Data Migration

Now that we have the table created in MySQL, we can export the data using DB2’s Export and import the data using MySQL’s mysqlimport tool. Both tools support by default a text file format that has tab delimited columns with each row of data on a separate line.

MySQL dump file
