MacImage is an utility to produce hybrid Macintosh/ISO 9660 CD-ROM images. Those CD-ROM images, after burning with your favorite burning software, behave equally on a PC and on a Macintosh. Supports installing BinHex and MacBinary files (Macintosh applications), custom icons.

MacImage is an utility to produce hybrid Macintosh/PC (HFS/ISO 9660) CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs on a PC. (DVD-ROMs are just bigger volumes.) Hybrid CD-ROMs behave like native media on both platforms (PC and Macintosh) and give all users the best possible experience when mounting the CD-ROM on their computer.
On a PC, those CD-ROMs behave like plain ISO 9660/Joliet CD-ROMs (autostart, long file names).
Likewise, they appear as plain Macintosh volumes when mounted on an Apple computer, with icons, long file names, “double-clickable” file icons and the like. It is even possible to install Macintosh applications (programs) on such media.
As other CD-ROM premastering software packages, MacImage manages a project file holding the list of files and folders that the user want to include in the ISO view and/or in the HFS view. Data files are shared between both views (or, better said: can be shared). This project file is compiled to produce an image file, which is then burnt (as an ISO image) with your favorite burning software.

Please note that MacImage also features two other working modes: the Partition Mode and the ISO + Apple Extensions Mode, but this should only interest advanced users.

MacImage and Hybrid CD-ROMs

Five easy steps:

  • Open/Create a project file
  • Drag & Drop files from the Explorer
  • Compile the image
  • Burn the image to disk

To produce a hybrid CD-ROM (default working mode of the program), the user creates a project file describing the structure of the (future) CD-ROM. Files and folders are selected and included in the project by dragging-and-dropping them from the Explorer.
It is possible to include files in only one view (HFS or ISO) or in both of them. Files can bear different names in both views, but they only exist once on the physical medium. Several specific Macintosh formats (BinHexed files and MacBinary files) are automatically recognized and handled as needed.

MacImage is a program to create Macintosh CD-ROMs on a PC.

Those CD-ROMs can be Hybrid CD-ROMs (Macintosh/Windows CD-ROMs, or more precisely HFS/HFS+ on one part and Joliet/ISO 9660 on the other one). This is the default working mode and the most used format.

The classical situation could be: let’s say you want to publish pictures and you don’t know precisely who will use the CD-ROM. You want to give all potential users (on PC and on Mac) the best experience while opening and using your CD-ROM.

Those CD-ROM can also be HFS CD-ROMs (classic Macintosh [HFS] magnetic volumes). In this second case, you know that the target user works on a Mac and want to do him a favor (because s/he is the payer): you therefore produce a CD-ROM which will behave exactly as s/he expects it.

Third, those CD-ROM can be ISO 9660 CD-ROMs with Apple Extensions.

MacImage features three different working modes. The default working mode is the Project Mode. You should only switch to the Partition Mode or to the ISO+ Mode if you have specific reasons to do it, that is, if you need their features.

Project Mode (default mode): The CD-ROM you will produce in the Project Mode can be read on a PC (and more generally on all platforms supporting the ISO 9660 standard and the Joliet extension). Those users will see what the program displays as the ISO View.

This CD-ROM will also be read on a Macintosh as a real Macintosh volume (that is, with the possibility to launch applications, and the like). The Macintosh users will see what the program displays as the HFS View. Files and folders are shared (or, better said, can be shared) between both views and may therefore exist in a single copy on the medium.

Partition Mode: The CD-ROM you will produce in the Partition Mode will only be readable on a Macintosh. You create a Virtual Partition, putting in it the files you want. The resulting Image can then be burned on a CD-ROM to produce a pure Macintosh CD-ROM, or copied onto an ISO image to produce a hybrid CD-ROM (without file sharing).

ISO+ Mode: The CD-ROM you produce in this mode is a classical ISO 9660 CD-ROM, but also applies the Apple Extensions to ISO 9660 to allow to store on the medium specific Macintosh files, that is files containing two File Forks.

It’s important to know that MacImage is not a CD burning software and it will not write to your CD-ROM burner to produce the final CD. You have to use the software you bought or received with the drive to do that. All major software packages offer a method to burn an ISO image.

Here are some key features of “MacImage”:

· More Robust Project Management · General Overhaul of the User Interface · Icon Composer to compose Macintosh and Windows icon files · Pasting Files and Folders from the Explorer · Creating Folders from Scratch · Searching/Replacing Signatures · Refreshing the Project · Refreshing the Contents of a Folder · Replacing the Access Path · Burning an Image from MacImage · Compiling an Image with MacImage from the Command Line · Registering MacImage Extensions in Windows Registry · Adding a Postgap to the Image

changes in abundance, dimensions, and biovolume of manne microorganisms are important parameters used in the estimation of a wide range of biological processes, including cell activity, growth rate, predation, and nutrient cycling. Routine measurement of these parameters has been hampered by the tedium of counting and measuring large numbers of microorganisms, the subjechvity of visual measurement using the eyepiece micrometer, cell shrinkage during preparahon for electron microscopy, and the small size of marine bacteria and some protists. Image-analysed microscopy overcomes these problems, but extant equipment and programs are cumbersome. MacImage, an image-analysis system that interfaces an Artek 810V image-analysis computer and a Macintosh computer, has been developed using the language Forth to improve operator-machine control and versatility. By using a combination of a more sensitive camera tube, additional magnification lenses. and a software system for the Macintosh computer specifically tailored for the measurement of marine microorganisms, we are now able to accurately and rapidly determine the abundance, size, shape, volume, and surface area of microorganisms ranging from marine bactena to fish larvae. Data collected by this system can be transferred directly to other Macintosh spreadsheet and graphics programs. To dustrate the versawity of MacImage, we present data on size, biovolume, biosurface area, and abundance of a natural sample of picoplankton from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island; size and biovolume data on a cultured clone of Synechococcus; and size, shape and area on the larvae of the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes amencanus.

The latest version of MacImage v9.1.0.2166 and the size of this installer is 5.4 MB. Logiciels & Services Duhem lets you try it first and then decide whether you want to pay $38.54 for it. This program is a part of the category System Utilities with the CD & DVD subcategory and supports .hfs formats. For the software, the most popular among users installation package name is Macimage.exe. A number of antivirus services checked the file and found it safe to use.
